Scratch that, only some of the feature have come a long way while others are only found in history books and Granddaddy tales. But as cars become newer many of these auto parts and features that generations have known and loved are quickly becoming history.

Do you remember your first car and that ultra cool cassette player? Well I challenge you to find a single new car that offers a cassette player, even as an optional feature. My friend you would be hard pressed to find a cassette player, or cassettes for that matter, even in Auto Accessory stores.

As the cassette player was phased out, CDs, and their players were center stage. Wonderful sound, wonderful systems and cars even made space for your CDs. I remember as a child, I was always ultra curious about the use of different buttons! The use of touch screens requires the driver to see what one is touching to ensure systems are properly engaged as opposed to the old-fashioned method of reaching out your hand flicking a knob or a button. So thank heavens, button and knobs will continue to grace your new cars for a little while longer. At least until the brains behind the scenes overcome these obstacles.

My friends the time is coming and is already here when we must bid farewell to the fun of driving a stick shift. Automatic transmission has been available since the 1950s. Since then cars have usually been offered in semi-automatic and automatic. However, today’s over worked generation prefers the ride, handling, and fuel efficiency of an automatic. How Japanese auto parts makers made masks and beds

In March, Japan’s largest auto parts maker, Denso Corp., was facing the urgent task of how to secure enough face masks for its workers given the mass shortage that was occurring amid the spread of COVID-19 infections.

While the company, located in Kariya, Aichi Prefecture, had sufficient stocks of masks back then, executives were getting worried that if the company ran short, its production might be affected, since each factory worker needs five masks a day.

At an executive meeting March 2, all eyes turned to Yasuhiko Yamazaki, 56, senior executive officer in charge of production, when he said, “How about making them ourselves?”

After returning home, Yamazaki cut a mask he had with a pair of scissors, looked at its three-layered structure with nonwoven material used as a middle layer, and felt certain it could be made by Denso.

The following day, he gathered seven to eight employees who were well-versed in auto parts production technology and were engaged in the designing and manufacturing of machinery and equipment.

The team, none of whom had ever seen a mask production facility, created a blueprint design of such a facility in a week, watching online videos and other materials for reference.

They then built a clean room, setting up plastic sheets across a 60-square-meter space in the firm’s headquarters, and established a manufacturing line to produce masks. The process included stretching three rolls of materials, placing them on top of each other while making creases, inserting nose wires and welding them using ultrasonic waves.

In order to supply masks to all the workers of the Denso group at home and abroad, they set a daily production target of 100,000. This means one mask should be made every 0.5 second, an unprecedented pace for auto parts production.

The quality of the materials procured from China was largely uneven, including crimps in ear loops. The Denso workers adjusted the position of automated robotic arms that pull out the loops by millimeters so that they are set close to where the loops come out by exactly 0.5 mm.

They made use of their expertise in auto parts production, such as spreading rolled materials and welding, and started the mass production of masks in mid-April.

The project was initially intended to avoid buying up masks in the local market, but as production gradually increased, the firm started donating some masks in late June to nearby nursery schools and welfare facilities.

Denso, a Toyota Motor Corp. affiliate, shared the blueprint design among Toyota group firms so that they could also produce masks by themselves.

Denso’s mask production is part of the Toyota group’s effort to support making medical supplies, but is not the only aspect.

Aisin Seiki had been producing beds from the 1960s through last year, and around 10 employees who had been engaged in the business gathered again to design foldable beds that are easy to carry in a matter of weeks.

Such projects were made possible because the firm has traditionally handed down the basic technology related to all the businesses it dealt with in the past, including the ones that it withdrew from, such as production of sewing machines for home use.

While projects aimed at helping those hit by COVID-19 tend to be regarded as a one-time business, Aisin Seiki Vice President Toshiyuki Mizushima, 61, stresses that they are “a part of the firm’s management strategy.”

In the spring of 2019, the firm decided to withdraw from all business unrelated to auto parts production in order to concentrate its resources on efforts to keep up with the drastic changes seen in the automotive industry, such as the spread of electric vehicles and self-driving cars. The firm is still in the midst of a struggle to find the best way to survive.

“We are in an era where auto parts makers also should think about how vehicles can contribute to society,” Mizushima said. “We can’t survive unless we change our way of thinking and come up with ways to utilize parts to solve problems in society.

“We take the same approach for supporting those hit by COVID-19. That’s why we put effort into this.”

Denso is also faced with the challenge of having to constantly roll out competitive products along with the evolving auto industry. Team members who launched the mask manufacturing line returned to their task of exploring new products using digital technology including artificial intelligence.

“After all, the foundation of new technologies lies in craftsmanship,” Yamazaki said. “(The mask production project) gave us the opportunity to rediscover the importance and joy of making things by hand.

“The experience of struggling desperately to come up with something in a short period of time will definitely help us in the future,” Yamazaki said, standing in front of masks moving along a production line amid the rattling sound of piston-cylinders.

urkey’s Kibar to establish auto parts facility in Europe

urkish conglomerate Kibar Holding plans to invest 40 million euros ($47 million) in automotive seat technology and also set up an auto parts production facility in Europe, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Haluk Kayabaşı said Tuesday.

Speaking at a conference, Kayabaşı said the company will make capacity-boosting investments in raw materials and key intermediate products next year following the disruption of supply chains because of the coronavirus.

“We are planning to invest 40 million euros in air suspension seats and also set up a manufacturing facility in Europe in the medium term,” Kayabaşı said.

Assan Hanil, the main auto parts supplier unit of Kibar Holding and its South Korean partner Seoyon E-Hwa, is known for its seating systems, bumper, door and instrument modules, according to its website.

Initially just providing parts for Hyundai, the company is now producing parts at its three facilities in Turkey and supplies to Mercedes-Benz Türk, Ford Otosan and Karsan Otomotiv.

Kibar Holding operates in seven sectors including automotive, food and metal. It has international business partners including South Korean Hyundai, Posco and Daewoo.

South Korean automotive giant Hyundai and Kibar Holding’s Assan operate a joint automotive factory in Turkey’s northwestern city of Izmit.

The factory has been producing A and B segments of i10 and i20 models, and it has recently launched mass production of Hyundai’s revamped third-generation i20.

The facility has an export volume of $1.7 billion (TL 13.32 billion), which places Hyundai Assan among Turkey’s top five exporters.

Hyundai Assan, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in Turkey in 2017, is jointly managed by the Hyundai and Kibar, which hold 70% and 30% of shares, respectively.

Auto parts makers offer to produce medical equipment

Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Manufacturers (Paapam) has offered its manufacturing facilities as well as expertise for developing miscellaneous medical equipment locally, starting from ventilators.

According to a letter sent to the Engineering Development Board on Wednesday, the association said it extended support keeping in view the rapid spread of novel coronavirus in Pakistan and the rising need of ventilators in the country.

The auto parts manufacturing body also praised government’s initiatives to cope with the situation such as allowing duty and tax-free import of medical equipment and other goods on an immediate basis. “We heard about the request from various government forums to explore the possibility of manufacturing vital medical equipment like ventilators in Pakistan,” the letter added. “The list of other imported medical items is long and the manufacturing of these goods will be considered keeping in view the population of the country and the import bill.”

The association expressed its support for confronting the health-related challenges being faced by the nation at present. “The Engineering Development Board, being the entity which looks after us, is assured of our fullest cooperation in the ongoing efforts for the development and manufacturing of medical equipment and items,” the letter said.

The body specifically requested for being part of the government’s ongoing efforts for the manufacturing of medical equipment.

Ryobi puts 560 workers in Carrickfergus on temporary redundancy

ALUMINIUM castings manufacturer Ryobi is to temporarily close its Carrickfergus operation and put all 560 of its staff on furlough until at least April 3. A senior source at its Northern Ireland headquarters told the Irish News that workers were told of the plan at 3pm yesterday.

The company, founded in Japan more than 70 years ago and which is a world leader in aluminium die casting, was unavailable for official comment at the time of going to press. It make it the biggest manufacturer in the north hit by the coronavirus pandemic, and comes as the entire European automobile industry has effectively shut until mid-April.

The Unite union, which represents many of the Ryobi workers, confirmed it had spoken to management. It said it was looking at details of the terms and conditions being offered to the workers under the furlough arrangements, adding that it would issue a statement in due course. Ryobi supplies a range of aluminium engine, transmission and structural car components for car manufacturers throughout Europe, with a customer list reading like a who’s who of the motor world, including Jaguar Land Rover, Volkswagen, Peugeot Citroen and Ford.

With an annual wage bill of £18 million, it is a huge asset to the wider Northern Ireland economy, and since 2012 it has invested more than £50m in its plant in Carrickfergus, from where it has operated since 1990. Yazaki halts car parts production in Bulgaria due to coronavirus

SOFIA — Japanese car parts maker Yazaki said on Tuesday it was closing its three plants in Bulgaria until April 5 in response to the measures aimed at containing the coronavirus outbreak and decreased demand for its products.

Yazaki’s plant shut-downs will be in place at the company’s three plants in southern Bulgaria, affecting around 2,470 employees in the town of Dimitrovgrad and around 2,000 in the towns of Sliven and Yambol. Community Balcony Sing-Along

Bulgarian economists are worried that the small and open economy will take a serious hit as major car makers across the globe are shutting manufacturing over the coronavirus pandemic.

As of Tuesday, Bulgaria had 202 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, and three deaths. The Black Sea state has introduced a state of emergency, closing schools, restaurants and bars and advised social distancing until April 13.

Yazaki, a leading producer of wiring harnesses, has already shut down production or some of its activities at 20 regional plants due to the coronavirus outbreak until the end of March, the statement said.
